Elementary School Art Exhibition

All girls in Elementary contributed work for an Art Exhibition as part of Student-led Conference Day.

The work was displayed in the brand new Drama room above the new grade 6 classrooms by the North gate.

The Grand Finale Art Exhibition (in case you missed it) will be in the Gym on April 12 and will encompass Kindergarten through grade 12.

Student-Led Conference

"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn."

Benjamin Franklin

The student-led conference went on very smoothly. We are proud to say that everyone was on time! As we rang the bell, students led their parents to a different center. The centers were decided by the students and included the following:  Maths, Portfolio, Author's Chair and Board games (disease unit).
Moving around to get a glimpse of how the students were doing, we could hear confident and happy voices. The parents were very supportive and they seemed to be enjoying themselves very much. There was a great hum in the room.
Maybe the background music (Richard Clayderman helped a bit!)
At times, a few students realised, as they chatted with their parents, they needed to revisit certain concepts. This was because the parents were asking very probing and deep questions.
This shows how great a tool a portfolio can be as a  formative assessment.

After the SLC, we will reflect on how it went. And then set new goals.

We are skillful readers

"No two persons ever read the same book."

–Edmund Wilson

Our students are learning to read with expression.

After visiting the website http://www.storylineonline.net/ they got to hear what a good reader does as she reads a story aloud.
  • They speak clearly.
  • They modulate their voice depending on the character's feelings and situation, and when different characters are introduced at various points in the story.
  • They pause for effect. They cackle, and sob, and rasp away...
Skill Factor
The students practiced reading to a buddy; and then they read aloud at home.

Will Factor
Most students took on the challenge of reading out aloud to an audience. In class, we have often spoken about moving out of our comfort zone in order to learn. This learning engagement provided the perfect opportunity for them to do so.

Thrill Factor
Listening to the final product, and realizing that they have met their success criteria gives the students the confidence they need to set the bar higher. They also get to see each other's videos and learn from them.

Come and let us listen to them...

Once upon a time...

Exhibition 2016: Getting Started

Grade Six had a very busy week sorting keywords into themes and figuring out what issues might be of interest for Exhibition 2016!
