We had an amazing talk and activity period today with Mr.Guilfoile and Ashlynn. Thank you so much for your time and effort in preparing this. Tomorrow we will add some feedback from the students to this post.

Government discussions- representations using blocks

Grade 6 students represented government types using blocks to help them understand different concepts of communism/socialism, democracy, capitalism, monarchy, constitutional monarchy and others. A lot of good discussion arose from the activity and we were able to address some misconceptions also! Enjoy!

The digits of the year 2016 need to be used only once in various combinations in order to come up with answers 1 to 100.

The students use their newfound knowledge of exponents and square roots to solve this challenging problem.

A decimal multiplication problem which should have a product closest to 100.

 A few students finally  came up with 99.96.

Comparing Governments

6A had some very interesting discussions when comparing Government systems and how different countries prioritize different issues. Here are a few snippets from conversations that were happening as the students filled their comparison maps.

What a wonderfully, depressing book! But so much to talk about. When we select short books to read aloud, it is with the purpose of discussing how the world work; how human beings treat each other; how we treat each other. This books, along with its haunting illustration was a perfect way to end our Thursday afternoon.

Governance

The students of 6B enjoyed learning about governments of countries of their choice. As they listened to students presenting their research  in the form of posters, they learnt about how different governments around the world function. The big understanding was that though some countries call themselves democracies, they are somewhat different depending upon various factors such as: economics, culture, leadership styles, etc.

Seah's poster shows amazing creative layout. The way she positions her images and creates little, salient captions make her posters eye-catching!

 A few days later , the students explain their understanding of different forms of governance using... Yes, unifix cubes.

Summative task:
Create a new form of government using gummy bears ( or candy). With it, create a constitution with a preamble. Explain how it is formed and what its function is. The constitution should reflect the vision of the preamble.
